The end bolsters are cast German silver in a unique Birds Head pattern; with a very unusual 3-dimensional Bullseye configuration for the blade pins. Overall, this 4 bladed pocketknife has a length is 6" long with the blades extended at both ends. Weight is 2 ounces or 57 grams. The Master Sheep’s Foot blade is 2 1/16" long with an early style long grove nail nick. Note the Master blade ricasso end is ground to leave the blade partially open with the sharp edge is fitted to rest securely inside the liners. This allows the Master blade to be secure, open like a normal blade, yet also function with the back spring to allow the spring-loaded blade to cut a cigar tip put into the hole in the Mother of Pearl scales, snip off the tip of a cigar or cheroot to allow it to breathe properly when smoked, and return the blade to its safe position inside the handle. The Master blade is hot stamped, "F. HERDER a Sn" in a curved pattern, "CROSS KEYS" trademark, and "SOLINGEN" in a curved pattern in a 3-line stamping (no Germany), with an early style long grove nail nick and the handwritten factory pattern number 1864 P in red ink. The pen blade is 1 9/16" long with an early style long grove nail nick and is hot stamped, "CROSS KEYS" trademark, "F. HERDER a Sn", "SOLINGEN" in a 3 straight line stamping (no Germany). The small curved unmarked blade is a Champagne foil removing blade with a grind from both sides and an early style long grove nail nick. The corkscrew is 1 7/16" long and held in place by a pair of cast German silver platforms with curved ends that are affixed to a matching swell in the back springs, and also slightly counter sunk into the top edges of the pearl scales. This corkscrew has a very strong spring that shares the same back spring as the Master blade. This small spring would have had to be especially tempered to be used by both the Master and corkscrew blades. The 3 liners are brass, with the middle liner being milled with small diagonal lines.
The entire knife is Pristine Mint, including the 4 blades that have all of the orginal Factory high polish finish. Even dead mint knives may have minuscule spot of spidering. Note the Champagne blade has one minuscule spot of desirable, naturally occurring spidering on one side that takes a century to form; and is proof of genuine age. There are also tiny bits of naturally occurring black aging inside a couple of the recessed rings of the bullet shaped pin bolsters. Although these can be seen with a jeweler's loupe and are in untouched condition; the knife looks as though it was made yesterday.
The Select, Exhibition Quality Mother of Pearl scales have iridescence that is found on pearl before the oceans became polluted and is not diminished by typical surface scratches from typical pocket wear, as this is a Salesman sample that was never used or carried. The scale pattern, like the knife pattern, is very unusual. The scales taper from one end to the other end, with a swale to accommodate the Master blade used for clipping cigar tips, with a 1/4" diameter hole on both sides to accommodate a cigar or a cheroot tip (small thin cigars that were very popular in the late 1800's).
The select pearl scales have small aberrations in the pearl that make each scale unique. However, these scales are just about perfect, and these naturally occurring layering of the pearl is not a flaw, but especially chosen to enhance the multi-color iridescence that is best viewed in direct sunlight. The escutcheon plate is a desirable bomb shield pattern that was hand inlaid using an old school tool called a Parser or bow fiddle. This knife came off a late 1800's knife board from a Factory Salesman collection, is in as new condition, and is a unique pattern I have never seen before.
This is an exceptional Pristine Mint Mother of Pearl fancy Victorian period pocketknife in the very rare and desirable Cigar cutter / Champagne fold cutter / Corkscrew pattern was intended for a Gentleman of Means for cigar smoking, Champagne foil removing, and a corkscrew to open a Whiskey or bottle of Spirits. This knife has ALL the features you could want, with Exhibition quality Mother of Pearl, Salesman sample inked blade, unsharpened, uncarried, pristine mint condition; and is as good as it gets. This was an expensive and unique pattern when made for a discerning Gentleman, and is an investment grade pocketknife today, that will only increase in value.
FRIEDR. HERDER ABR. SOHN is the earliest German Cutlery Co. recorded, beginning in 1632. They were very active in the late 1870's - 1880’s and were well poised to help take over the World domination of cutlery by Germany between the series of U.S. tariffs on imported Sheffield cutlery that began in 1891. By 1900, Germany's cutlery exports had exceeded Sheffield cutlery exports. This knife came off a Factory mounted cardboard display of knives in different sizes, patterns and handle material. Some knives have no inked blade marking, but this one has the factory pattern number 1864 P handwritten on the Master blade in red ink. This is a rare, desirable, handmade Cigar cutter / champagne foil cutter / corkscrew / unique pattern pocketknife.
